What is a roller grille?

A roller grille is an open lattice of steel or aluminium links that rolls up like a shutter, protecting the opening while leaving the shop fully visible.

Grilles are the choice for malls, arcades and streets where a closed shutter would look out of place. Fitted behind the glass, they usually avoid planning altogether. Fitted outside, they still count as a change to the frontage.

They protect against smash-and-grab but not against someone reaching in with a tool, and do nothing for weather, so judge the risk before choosing.

What are the options?

Internal grilleBehind the glass
External grilleCovers the glass too, with gaps between the links
Side-slidingWhere there is no room for a box
