What is a security glass upgrade?
Security glass is laminated glass with a tough interlayer that holds the pane together when it is struck, tested to the BS EN 356 scale of P ratings.
Laminated glass cracks but stays in the frame, which buys time and keeps the unit weathertight until a replacement arrives. Where an external shutter would not get planning permission, laminated glass is a common alternative.
Ratings run from P1A to P5A for ball-drop tests and P6B to P8B for axe tests. Heavier glass needs a frame that can carry it, so we check the existing frontage before recommending anything.
What are the options?
| Standard laminated | For most high-street windows |
| Anti-bandit laminate | Thicker, for higher-risk stock |
| Replacement pane only | Keeps your existing frame |

What do people ask about security glass upgrades?
What is the difference between toughened and laminated glass?
Toughened glass breaks into small pieces. Laminated glass stays in the frame, which is why it is used for security.
Does security glass need planning permission?
Replacing glass like for like generally does not, but listed buildings need their own check.
Can my existing frame take thicker glass?
Sometimes. We check the frame and bead depth at survey.
