What is an internal shutter?
An internal shutter sits behind the shop window, so the glass stays on show to the street and the shutter protects the stock.
Internal shutters leave the outside of the building alone, which is often what a planning officer wants in a conservation area, or on a listed building subject to consent. Attackers still have to get through the glass, so laminated glass makes a strong pairing.
You need depth behind the window for the guides and a clear line for the curtain, so displays have to be planned around it.
What are the options?
| Open grille | Keeps the display visible |
| Perforated | More strength, softer view |
| Solid | Hides stock completely |

Do you need planning permission?
Internal work usually does not need planning permission, because the outside does not change. A listed building can still need consent. External grilles usually do need permission.

Do internal shutters need planning permission?
Usually not, as the outside does not change, but a listed building may still need consent.
Do internal shutters stop the glass being broken?
No, the glass stays exposed. Laminated glass is the right partner.
How much room do I need?
Enough depth for the guides and a clear path for the curtain. We check at survey.
