What is a high-security shutter?
A high-security shutter is a heavy-duty shutter tested to a recognised attack standard, usually LPS 1175, where the rating shows the tools resisted and for how long.
Under LPS 1175 Issue 8 the letter shows the toolset and the number shows the minutes of delay, so C5 means Category C tools for five minutes. The older SR scale still appears on many specifications, with SR1 equal to A1, SR2 to B3, SR3 to C5 and SR4 to D10.
Only a certified product, fitted as tested, carries the rating, so ask to see the certificate. Your insurer may tell you which rating they want, so ask them first.
What are the options?
| A1 to B3 | Lower-risk units and doors |
| C5 | Jewellers, pharmacies, phone shops |
| D10 and above | Priced to the insurer's requirement |

Do you need planning permission?
An external shutter usually needs planning permission. Many councils resist solid external shutters, and some resist perforated ones too. An internal grille or shutter is usually the safer route, so we can advise what to check before you order.
