What is a shopfront with a concealed shutter?
A shopfront with a concealed shutter has the shutter box built in behind the fascia, so the barrel and motor are hidden and only the guide channels show.
It is a tidier look, and it is far easier to arrange on a new frontage than on an existing one. The fascia is set out around the box from the start, with a removable panel so an engineer can reach the motor and safety parts later. Hidden head gear still has to be reachable, so we always design the access in.
You need enough height above the door head for the rolled curtain. On a typical 3 m shutter that is around 250 to 300 mm. Where the opening is tight we look at a smaller lath, or a box set inside the shop.
What are the options?
| Behind the fascia | The usual choice on a new frontage |
| Inside the shop | For tight heights or sensitive buildings |
| Recessed in the soffit | Where a canopy or deep head allows it |

An external shutter or a changed frontage usually needs planning permission from your council. Like-for-like replacement often does not. Listed buildings need listed building consent, and rules differ across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. We tell you what applies at survey.

What do people ask about shopfronts with concealed shutters?
How much height do I need for a concealed shutter box?
Around 250 to 300 mm above the door head on a typical opening, more on a wide or tall shutter. We measure it at survey.
Can an engineer still reach a hidden shutter?
Yes, if it is designed properly. We fit a removable panel, because safety parts have to be reachable for servicing.
Can I conceal a shutter on my existing shopfront?
Sometimes, if the fascia can be rebuilt. Otherwise a neat surface box in a matching colour is the practical answer.
