What adds to a shutter price?
A shutter box built in behind the fascia adds a guide price of £295 to £695 plus VAT to a new shutter.
- Special RAL colour. A guide price of £95 to £295 plus VAT, covering frame and shutter.
- Fire-escape override. A guide price of £245 to £595 plus VAT. It applies where the shutter covers an escape route.
- Height. Anything above about 3 m is priced from the survey, because the curtain, the barrel and the box all grow.
- Electrics. The shutter needs a power supply at the head of the opening. We check the route at survey.
Planning can change the type you are allowed, which changes the price. A council may refuse a solid shutter and accept an internal grille. Check the planning position before you fix a budget.
What does a shutter cost to run?
A service and safety check has a fixed price of £145 plus VAT per shutter. It covers a spring tension check, a motor and limit check, a guide and lath inspection, lubrication, a safety brake test and a written condition report.
The service interval comes from the maker's instructions and how often the shutter runs, so read our maintenance guide before setting one. As a worked example, take a shutter serviced once a year for 10 years, with one motor change along the way:

This is an example and not a forecast. Curtains and guides can last many years with planned servicing, while the motor, springs and bottom-rail seal are the wearing parts. A shutter that runs many times a day will wear faster.
What would a 3.5 m perforated shutter cost on an existing frontage?
A perforated electric shutter 3 to 4 m wide with a built-in box has a combined guide price of £2,490 to £3,590 plus VAT.

On an existing frontage a built-in box depends on what sits behind the fascia. If there is no room, the choice is a surface box or a new fascia. Our box guide covers that decision.
Should I repair an old shutter or replace it?
Repair it if the curtain and guides are sound, because a new motor has a fixed price of £395 plus VAT against £1,450 to £1,995 plus VAT for a new solid shutter up to 3 m wide. Replace it when the fault is in the curtain or the structure.

Stop using a shutter that drops or runs crooked, whichever way you decide. A repair visit is not covered by the free survey, so ask for the price before the visit.
Why do some shutter quotes look much cheaper?
A low quote often leaves out items a finished installation needs, so compare the line items and not the total. Ask every firm to confirm these points in writing:
- The curtain material and gauge, and the finish.
- The motor size in Nm, and the maker.
- How the shutter stops itself trapping a person. Powered shutters must have this.
- How the shutter opens in a power cut, and who holds the tool.
- Whether removal of the old shutter and making good are included.
- Who provides the power supply at the head.
- Who sets the limits, tests the safety devices and hands over the instructions.
- What the guarantee covers, and for how long.

Do you survey for free?
For new work, yes. Repairs and servicing are not covered by the free survey. On islands and in remote areas a survey is by arrangement.
