What is worth knowing?
What will my insurer want?
Some insurers name a shutter type or rating, and many ask for locks and service records. Ask them before you order, as it saves a change later.
Does a shutter need planning permission?
An external shutter usually does. Many councils resist solid external shutters, and some resist perforated ones too. An internal grille or shutter is usually the safer route, so we can advise what to check before you order.
How long does a shutter last?
Curtains and guides can last many years with planned servicing. Motors, springs and locks go first, and a busy shop will wear them faster.
How much will it cost?
| Opening width | Typical unit | Guide price plus VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 m | A typical single shop unit | £2,195 to £2,895 |
| 3 to 4 m | A wider single unit | £2,795 to £3,595 |
| 4 to 5 m | A double-fronted or corner unit | £3,395 to £4,395 |
| 5 to 6 m | A large double unit | £3,995 to £5,195 |

Do you need consent in Sidmouth?
Usually yes, if the shutter goes on the outside. External shutters change how the building looks, so East Devon District Council will normally expect a planning application. Illuminated signs can need advertisement consent, depending on size, position and area. Listed buildings need listed building consent as well.
