What can you expect in Hitchin?
Hitchin sits in Hertfordshire, and North Hertfordshire District Council is the planning authority. For most shops that means checking consent before the order is placed, not after it.
What should you think about first?
Surface box or hidden box?
A surface box under the fascia is quicker and cheaper. A hidden box looks far better, but needs height above the door head and a removable access panel.
How long does a shutter last?
Curtains and guides can last many years with planned servicing. Motors, springs and locks go first, and a busy shop will wear them faster.
Do I need a safety edge?
That depends on the risk assessment. Powered shutters near the public are assessed against BS EN 12453, and we quote what the result calls for.
What should you budget?
| Opening width | Typical unit | Guide price plus VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 m | A typical single shop unit | £2,195 to £2,895 |
| 3 to 4 m | A wider single unit | £2,795 to £3,595 |
| 4 to 5 m | A double-fronted or corner unit | £3,395 to £4,395 |
| 5 to 6 m | A large double unit | £3,995 to £5,195 |
Guide prices, not offers. Your written quotation sets the final figure.
Will this need planning permission in Hitchin?
An external shutter normally needs planning permission from North Hertfordshire District Council. An internal shutter or grille often does not, so it is worth checking before you order. Illuminated signs can need advertisement consent, depending on size, position and area. Listed buildings need listed building consent as well.
