How does it work across the Highlands?

We work right across the Highlands, including Inverness, Fort William, Nairn and Thurso. Rules on frontages and shutters differ from one council to the next. Highland Council is the council to check with here. Inverness is the main centre, with Fort William, Thurso and Wick serving huge areas in demanding weather.

What should you think about first?

Surface box or hidden box?

A surface box under the fascia is quicker and cheaper. A hidden box looks far better, but needs height above the door head and a removable access panel.

What will my insurer want?

Some insurers name a shutter type or rating, and many ask for locks and service records. Ask them before you order, as it saves a change later.

What about a fire exit?

A shutter must never trap people in. If it covers an escape route, it needs to be open while the premises are occupied, or opened easily from inside.

Do you need consent across the Highlands?

An external shutter normally needs planning permission from your council. An internal shutter or grille often does not, so it is worth checking before you order. In Scotland, work can also need a building warrant before it starts, and listed buildings need listed building consent from the council.

What do people ask about shutters for existing shopfronts across the Highlands?

Can you match the shutter to my shopfront?

Yes. We powder coat to a RAL colour to match your frame as closely as we can.

Do I need planning permission for a shutter across the Highlands?

An external shutter usually needs it, and your council decides. Many councils resist solid external shutters, and some resist perforated ones too.

How soon can you fit a shutter added to an existing shopfront across the Highlands?

Lead time is confirmed on your quotation. We agree the fitting day with you.

Does adding a shutter need planning permission?

An external shutter usually does. Many councils also say which types they will accept, so check before you order. We can advise what to ask.
