What happens in Haddington?
Most shop owners come to us at one of three points: a new lease, a break-in, or a frontage that has finally given up. In each case the first step is a survey, and we cover postcodes including EH41.
What should you think about first?
How long does a shutter last?
Curtains and guides can last many years with planned servicing. Motors, springs and locks go first, and a busy shop will wear them faster.
Steel or aluminium laths?
Steel is stronger and heavier. Aluminium is lighter and quieter, which helps under flats. Most shops are well served by either.
What about a fire exit?
A shutter must never trap people in. If it covers an escape route, it needs to be open while the premises are occupied, or opened easily from inside.

Will this need planning permission in Haddington?
Probably, if it is external. East Lothian Council decides. Many councils resist solid external shutters, and some resist perforated ones too. In Scotland, work can also need a building warrant before it starts, and listed buildings need listed building consent from the council.
