What can you expect in Caerleon?
Our surveys in Caerleon cover postcodes including NP18, along with Newport and Cwmbran. Planning applications here go to Newport City Council, so it is worth reading any shopfront guidance it publishes before anything is drawn.
What makes the difference?
Do I need a safety edge?
That depends on the risk assessment. Powered shutters near the public are assessed against BS EN 12453, and we quote what the result calls for.
What about a fire exit?
A shutter must never trap people in. If it covers an escape route, it needs to be open while the premises are occupied, or opened easily from inside.
How is the shutter controlled?
By key switch, remote or both, and we specify a manual override for power cuts. Keep the override instructions somewhere that staff can find them.

Do you need consent in Caerleon?
Probably, if it is external. Newport City Council decides. Many councils resist solid external shutters, and some resist perforated ones too. Illuminated signs can need advertisement consent, depending on size, position and area. Listed buildings need listed building consent, and rules are set by the Welsh Government.
