How does it work in Witham?
A frontage in Witham has to suit the street as well as the shop. Braintree District Council decides what is acceptable where planning applies, so we draw with that in mind.
What is worth knowing?
Do I need a safety edge?
That depends on the risk assessment. Powered shutters near the public are assessed against BS EN 12453, and we quote what the result calls for.
What about a fire exit?
A shutter must never trap people in. If it covers an escape route, it needs to be open while the premises are occupied, or opened easily from inside.
How is the shutter controlled?
By key switch, remote or both, and we specify a manual override for power cuts. Keep the override instructions somewhere that staff can find them.

Will this need planning permission in Witham?
An external shutter normally needs planning permission from Braintree District Council. An internal shutter or grille often does not, so it is worth checking before you order. Illuminated signs can need advertisement consent, depending on size, position and area. Listed buildings need listed building consent as well.

An external shutter usually needs it, and Braintree District Council decides. Many councils resist solid external shutters, and some resist perforated ones too.
Vision or perforated: which shows more?
Vision shows more, as the slots are bigger. Perforated gives a softer view and a more solid look.
