What happens in Kirkcaldy?
Kirkcaldy sits in Fife, and Fife Council is the planning authority. For most shops that means checking consent before the order is placed, not after it.
What makes the difference?
Surface box or hidden box?
A surface box under the fascia is quicker and cheaper. A hidden box looks far better, but needs height above the door head and a removable access panel.
What about a fire exit?
A shutter must never trap people in. If it covers an escape route, it needs to be open while the premises are occupied, or opened easily from inside.
What will my insurer want?
Some insurers name a shutter type or rating, and many ask for locks and service records. Ask them before you order, as it saves a change later.
What should you budget?

Will this need planning permission in Kirkcaldy?
An external shutter normally needs planning permission from Fife Council. An internal shutter or grille often does not, so it is worth checking before you order. In Scotland, work can also need a building warrant before it starts, and listed buildings need listed building consent from the council.
