What can you expect in Cardiff?
Cardiff sits in South Glamorgan, and City of Cardiff Council is the planning authority. For most shops that means checking consent before the order is placed, not after it.
What should you check before you decide?
Can I keep trading during the work?
Often, in part. Fitting days can be planned for your quiet days, and closed-day or out-of-hours work can be arranged.
Can it have a shutter later?
Yes, but it is far neater to allow for one now. Tell us at survey, and we will leave height behind the fascia even if the shutter comes later.
What about the fascia and sign?
We set out the fascia at the same time, so your sign fixings and any shutter box do not clash. Illuminated signs can need advertisement consent, depending on size, position and area.
What are the guide prices?
| Opening width | Typical unit | Guide price plus VAT |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 m | A typical single shop unit | £3,600 to £5,995 |
| 3 to 4 m | A wider single unit | £4,695 to £7,795 |
| 4 to 5 m | A double-fronted or corner unit | £5,895 to £9,695 |
| 5 to 6 m | A large double unit | £7,195 to £11,995 |
Guide prices, not offers. Your written quotation sets the final figure.
Will this need planning permission in Cardiff?
Usually yes, if the look of the frontage changes. Replacing like for like may not need permission, but City of Cardiff Council has the final say. Illuminated signs can need advertisement consent, depending on size, position and area. Listed buildings need listed building consent, and rules are set by the Welsh Government.

How much does a steel shopfront cost in Cardiff?

A change to how the frontage looks usually does. City of Cardiff Council is the council to check with, and we advise at survey.

Yes, and it is best planned now. We can price the frontage and shutter as one job.
Does steel rust?
Not if the finish is right and stays intact. It is galvanised or primed, then powder coated.
